I will focus on whaling as a work, whaling as tourism, the life-history of whalers, and community welfare in whale fishing towns. I hope to open up the new horizons: "Sea as a street". I attempt to do them by fieldworks, interviews and making documentaries.

I have researched based on the question: how immigrants to Japan construct their daily lives under "national spatial control"? The number of officially registered foreigners is more than two millions, however, most previous researchers have not completely grasped various situations around immigrants in Japan. Based on the awareness of the issues above, in this PSEA program, I intend to make the list of "filmography of multi-ethnicized Japan" from learning practices of pictures taken by immigrants themselves and the people concerned with them.

In Japan, the number of poor people has been more and more increasing. Especially, the homeless people have been regarded as the symbol of the poorest people. In such situation, government and many other people have insisted such poor people should take responsibility for the poverty by themselves. Recently, however, some movements have been caused by the poor people themselves and their supporters who begun to struggle against the poverty. What kinds of changes have the movements made? I would like to find the possibility and the limit of those movements of solidarity.

I have been involved with West African music for about two years. During that time, my activities included learning dancing techniques, practicing in parks, and performing on the streets among other things. Although these activities are quite simple, we encounter and experience the conception of "publicness", "different culture", "the nature", and "cooperativeness" through these daily activities. I will approach “the current perspectives on the streets” and social attitudes through my experiences as an ethnic music performer.

In recent years, several towns have preserved former mines. People living around those areas and some other people from outside have tried to make the best use of them for community planning or sightseeing. Moreover, they even actively try to save their experiences and memories in the towns. I am conducting research on these phenomena in Japan from these viewpoints: the practices of keeping the traces of buildings and recording them on film. I will focus on the current perspective of the street based on the traces of buildings in the town and the narrative of the people who left the mines and moved to other places.

I am interested in rough sleepers and their safety nets in contemporary society. I focus not only on social policy but also on the dynamic phenomena seen on the streets. I especially pay attention to the relationships between faith-based organizations and the rough sleepers.

Internet users constantly upload videos of street performances on video sharing websites. Occasionally, many performers gather on the street through communication in electronic bulletin boards or SNS, and make a group dancing video. It is necessary to turn one’s eyes not only to real spaces but also to virtual spaces in order to investigate the current phenomena on the street. Through this program, I intend to study the current street situation, which has been created by the interaction between real and virtual.

The image of the streets in every corner of the world, which I have affection for is the chaotic order of the mixed-up cultures, societies, and political matters. Streets are not only a stable "space" mapped on grids but also a "place (or locale)" constructed by various people, events, and collective memory. In my view, sociological studies on streets are the exploration of contemporary issues on "public (or counter-public)" or "communality", "inclusiveness" in this age.
